7/13 Pear Picking and Donation!

Updated: Nov 27

The Fruit and Nut Foundation recently had the wonderful opportunity to visit a pear farm in Sacramento and harvest fruit for donation. We were especially fortunate that the farm owners graciously allowed us to pick pre-harvest! The orchard was abundant with Green Anjou and Bosc pears, ready to be gathered.

Our dedicated team managed to pick around 200 pounds of pears, which we then transported back to San Jose for weighing and donation.

For this donation, we chose to support Martha's Kitchen, a nonprofit organization committed to serving the community with fresh, nutritious meals. In 2023 alone, Martha’s Kitchen provided 2.8 million meals to those in need. We’re proud to say that they gladly accepted all 200 pounds of pears we harvested.

Pears are a nutrient-dense fruit that offers significant health benefits. A single pear provides 21% of the daily value for fiber, 8% for Vitamin C, and 4% for potassium. The fiber in pears helps regulate blood sugar levels, and studies have shown that people who include pears in their diet tend to have higher diet quality, lower body weight, and are 35% less likely to be obese.

However, the day wasn’t without its challenges. As the afternoon progressed, the temperature soared, with California experiencing record highs, sometimes exceeding 100 degrees. Despite the heat, our team persevered, enjoying the outdoors and making the most of the experience.

One good thing about the experience was the kindness of the farm owner. He allowed us to pick fruit that would have been harvested as a way to give back to the community. He also let the team pick as much fruit as they wanted by hand, resulting in a car filled to the brim with pears! The team extends our thanks to the farm.

One highlight of the day was the incredible generosity of the farm owner. Not only did he allow us to pick fruit that would have otherwise been harvested, but he also encouraged us to gather as much as we could by hand. By the end of the day, our car was filled to the brim with pears! We extend our heartfelt thanks to the farm owner for his kindness and support.

The Fruit and Nut Foundation is deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to our community and make a meaningful nutritional impact on the lives of those in need.
